Traveling to the UK? You may need to apply for an ETA to enter

Many international travelers to the UK now need to register for an online authorisation before touching down in the UK or many EU nations.

Updated: 5 March 2025

New rules came into force on 8 January 2025 and visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia and other non-European nations who previously did not need a visa for short stays in the UK are now required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the country.

Passengers who are transiting airside are exempt. So, for example, those who are changing planes at London Heathrow and therefore do not pass through UK border control, will not need an ETA.

To receive an ETA, travellers must fill out an online form and pay a £10 fee. The application process is usually approved within a few hours but can take up to three working days so early application is advised. The authorisation is valid for multiple entries to the UK for stays of up to six months and lasts for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires – whichever comes first.

From 2 April 2025, EU nationals will also need to obtain an ETA before entering the UK.  The application for this opens from Wednesday 5 March 2025. Citizens of the UK, Ireland and those with valid UK visas will be exempt.

The aim of the scheme is to create a more streamlined entry system by confirming traveler eligibility to enter the UK before leaving their country of origin. According to the UK government’s Home Office, the details collected will help increase security with improved traveler tracking.

The UK’s ETA scheme is one of several new electronic entry programmes being rolled out worldwide during 2025.
